The Power and Purpose of the Stepping-Stone Jobs

Taken from the book “Caught Between a Dream and a Job” by Delatorro McNeal II

There might be some people, like me, who do all they can to try to find a perfect job fit or their dream job, without realising that sometimes it takes Stepping-Stone Jobs to get to your Dream Job.

We might ask: Can’t I just find the right job and stick to it forever? Is there a need to take a job and then quit it to find another?

However, how well do we know ourselves and our passions and abilities at this point of time? And how well do we know the world. Do we have the right perspective?

Consider these points Mc Neal II mentions in this book.

  1. The right jobs provide you with structure, discipline, and exposure.
  2. The right jobs provide you with experience.
  3. The right jobs teach you the professional and interpersonal skills necessary in today’s marketplace.
  4. The right jobs provide monetary compensation for your time and effort.
  5. The right jobs are emotionally low-risk opportunities for growth.
  6. The right jobs are building blocks for greater pursuits.

Wow. 🙂 So clear and concise with good elaboration.

I think I’ve failed to understand this for too long and hesitated to find a job passionately for too long.

Nothing is wasted. You may think your current job has no link at all to what you really wish to be doing, but if the job is helping you grow as a person in skills and character, why not complete the training process before heading to another job that is nearer to your dream job?

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
